Articles from the week: Where do I get my news?

I usually read articles on my phone or laptop/Source: Wix Media

As a journalist, I’m always on the hunt for good quality news, especially publications that relate to my interests and my beat I’ve been covering this semester of gender, equity and community. I’m not a huge podcast person, so this list will mainly be digital publications, however, if you have any podcast recs, send them my way!

Here a few of my favorite media outlets and why I like them:

Beat/Interest Related:

I like these outlets because of how closely they tie into my interest in gender and equity.

The 19th* is an independent, nonprofit newsroom reporting on gender, politics and policy. I like that they do a lot of “explainer” type of reporting by breaking down bigger issues into digestible pieces for their audience.

The Athletic is a sports-focused publication. It is mainly focused on men's sports, but there are some very high-quality women’s sports reporters who write investigative, enterprise stories about the USWNT, WBNA, PWHL and other women’s sports leagues.

Hyper Local:

Like I’ve mentioned before, I’m originally from Minnesota, so I like to check out the Star Tribune to stay up-to-date on what’s happening at home. They’ve done some serious, Pulitzer prize winning projects and I enjoy seeing the local angle that they take on larger events, like the Olympics.

For my role as Editor-in-Chief of The Ithacan this academic year, I also keep a very close eye on what’s happening at Ithaca College and the generally Ithaca area. I’m biased because I did intern here a few summers ago, but the Ithaca Voice provides high-quality, digital focused updates on the Ithaca community.

Misc:

Slate Magazine does have some hard-hitting journalism, but I mainly look at their advice columns for fun. And to wonder how people get themselves into certain situations.

Similarly, Refinery 29 has a little less news journalism but I'm a weekly reader of their “Money Diaries” series, which follows submissions from readers about how they budget and spend money throughout the course of a week.
